I-Hsin Lin, a graduate student at Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan have stated that the antioxidants in green tea can inhibit tumor growth. This research study was presented at the American Association of Cancer Research at the meeting of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, Coronado, California, January 2010.
Lin found a protective effect, especially in the group of smokers who have a specific genotype is not associated with cancer risk. Together with his team, he evaluates 170 patients with lung cancer and 340 healthy patients. They were asked to describe their smoking habits, their green tea drinking habits and other lifestyle factors for five years.
These researchers do separation genotyping on the participants to see if any of them who have congenital genotypes associated with cancer risk. This includes the IGF1, IGF2, and IGFBP3.
In general, smokers and non smokers who do not drink green tea have a lung cancer risk five times greater than those drinking at least one drink a day, said Lin.
The green tea drinkers who do not have the inherent risk of cancer genes have a decreased risk of lung cancer as much as 66 percent compared with green tea drinkers who have congenital genes susceptible to cancer.
Lin himself has said, the best way to prevent cancer cells are exposed to stop smoking, while only green tea reduces the risk.
